Teen Volunteering

Interested in Volunteering?

Interested in volunteering at the library? If you're 14-17 yrs old, fill out our Teen Volunteer Application and drop it off at the library's circulation desk or email it to Amalia Ash at AAsh@trenton-mi.com

Once the completed application and work permit is given to library staff, you will be contacted within 5 days for a volunteering opportunity. Please note that as we have a limited number of volunteer opportunities and changing library needs, we cannot guarantee a certain number of volunteer hours or immediate placement.

 Why volunteer at the library?

What are some of the things I can do as a volunteer?

Helping to organize books

Moving boxes of books

Checking library shelves and finding books for library staff.

Help library staff with library programs. This can include preparing program materials, setting up the events, assisting, and cleaning up afterwards.

Be part of the Teen Activity Board and help plan teen library programs, select books and more.

How often can I volunteer?

Volunteer hours and scheduling availability are based on library needs.

You can volunteer once, monthly, weekly or for a few days in a week.

We ask volunteers to commit to working no more than three hours a day.

Please be on time for your volunteering shift and call if you need to cancel. Volunteering is like a job and you are counted on.

We follow the State of Michigan work permit guidelines

These guidelines are based on age and hours also vary between the summer and when school is in session.

Is there a dress code at the library?

Please follow the library’s dress code, as it is a professional environment. For teen volunteers, this means clothes that are appropriate for school.

If you are volunteering around library patrons, please keep cell phones out of sight and follow the library policy regarding cell phone use.

Headphones are allowed only when working in the library office area.

What happens after I turn in my application?

After your application and work permit is accepted, library staff will call you in five days to inform you if we have volunteer opportunities.

If there are not any opportunities at this time, your application will be on file for 6 months should any arise.

If a volunteer opportunity is available, Library staff will discuss the volunteering schedule and availability.

On your first volunteering shift, you will be receive a short orientation and shown your tasks. The orientation counts toward your time spent volunteering.

Thank you for taking the time to be a volunteer at the library. If you have any questions about becoming a teen volunteer at the library, please contact Youth Services Librarian Amalia Ash at AAsh@trenton-mi.com or (734) 676-9777.
